Surel’s Place: Shelter & Support for Artists

By living in a community with a vibrant culture, we are able to be the kind of place that lifts up those around us. Having a strong, vibrant arts community makes Boise a better place for everyone to live, work and give.

The Pettitt Group real estate team supports art in all forms. We believe that art creates community, which is why each month we choose a local non-profit organization to support.

We are excited to announce our support for Surel’s Place in May 2018. We will give $100 per transaction to Surel’s Place this month, or a minimum of $1,000 (whichever is greater).

Founded in 2012, Surel’s Place is a non-profit artist-in-residence and local art support program that has served almost 50 national artists, 200 local artists, and thousands of patrons of all ages. Our artists are of varying mediums—writers, visual artists, musicians—and all of them thrive on interaction with the community through free and low-cost art events that invite patrons into the process of art making. Based on the belief that art gives insight into the human experience, Surel’s Place events, including workshops, readings, performances, and art talks, are welcoming to experts and novices alike, and all programming is infused with the idea that shared art experiences are a vital and sublime way to strengthen our community.

In addition to offering unique and inspiring events, Surel’s Place strives to offer programming that directly addresses the community’s needs. Their gallery helps to offset the shortage of professional display space for artists, and they offer accessible professional development opportunities for artists as well. In addition, the organization works to bring quality art instruction and experiences into the public schools through their PARTNER Program, for which two practiced community and teaching artists are selected annually.

READING
ZAT LUN: HOME BELONGING AND IDENTITY
Thursday, April 26th | 6:30pm doors | 7pm reading
During this reading, Ms. Myint will share the work of her residency, Zat Lun. This family history project will explore questions of home, belonging, and identity through an engagement with place, language, and memory. A Burmese word that roughly translates to narrative or chronicle, zat lun, is a record, an account, or a testimony consisting of observations, memories, and gossip, which have the potential to become legend and myth. A meandering narrative whose beginning and end are obscured and uncertain, a zat lun is inevitably complicated, contradictory, and incomplete as it endeavors to chronicle “real” or “true” events. This reading blurs the lines between fiction and non-fiction and may appeal to hose with interests in both genres as well as memoir.
